Station - Instructions for candidate

You are a medical student on placement in a general practice in Bunbury.

Dennis Marsh, a 68-year-old retired postal worker, has booked to see the GP because his ankles have been swelling. The GP has asked you to see him first.

Your tasks are to:

  1. Take a focused history.
  2. Request any relevant investigations.
  3. State your most likely diagnosis and differential diagnoses to the examiner.
  4. Outline your initial management plan to the examiner.
  • You do NOT need to examine the patient; examination findings will be provided by the examiner on request.
  • You do NOT need to summarise your history to the examiner.

This is a 10-minute station, with 2 minutes of reading time.

Ask the examiner

Say what you would examine or request, the way you would in the station. Nothing is named until you ask for it.

Whatever the examiner recognises is revealed below. Or pick a numbered item to reveal it blind.

Investigations

Say what you would request, as you would in the station. This station does not hand results back - the examiner notes what you ask for.

Examination

Say what you would examine and how; the examiner reports what you would find.

Candidate view - instructions only. Open the full station for the patient script, the examiner pack and the marking sheet.
