Station - Instructions for candidate
You are an intern on the respiratory ward of a Perth teaching hospital.
Frank Bellamy, a 68-year-old retired boilermaker, was admitted yesterday with breathlessness. A diagnostic aspiration of fluid from the right side of his chest was done this morning and the results are back. The registrar has asked you to see him, work out what is going on, and then discuss it.
Your tasks are to:
- Take a focused history from Mr Bellamy.
- Perform a focused examination.
- Request any relevant investigations and interpret the results provided.
- Summarise your findings to the examiner with your most likely diagnosis and differential diagnoses.
- Outline your initial management plan to the examiner.
- Please verbalise your examination to the examiner; findings will be provided on request.
- You do not need to write prescriptions or medication orders.
This is a 15-minute station, with 2 minutes of reading time.
