Station - Instructions for candidate
You are a junior doctor working in a general practice in Perth.
Majok Deng, a 23-year-old university student, has booked a standard appointment. The booking note says 'burning when passing urine, one week'. He is otherwise well. Your supervising GP has already examined him and recorded the findings below, because he was embarrassed and asked for the examination to be done first.
Examination findings (supervising GP)
Mild redness of the urethral meatus with a small amount of clear mucoid discharge on milking. Testes and epididymes normal and non-tender. No genital ulcers, warts or rash. No inguinal lymphadenopathy. Joints, eyes and skin normal.
Your tasks are to:
1Take a focused history and a sexual history.
2Request any relevant investigations.
3Explain your provisional diagnosis to Mr Deng.
4Outline your initial management to Mr Deng.
You do NOT need to examine the patient; the findings above are available to you.
You do NOT need to summarise your history to the examiner.
You do not need to write a prescription in this station.
This is a 15-minute station, with 2 minutes of reading time.
Ask the examiner
Say what you would examine or request, the way you would in the station. Nothing is named until you ask for it.
Investigations
Say what you would request, as you would in the station. This station does not hand results back - the examiner notes what you ask for.
