Hand wash
Verify the patient's identity
Explanation of the examination
Obtain consent
Ask about any current pain
Position patient lying flat on examination bed

Measure Brachial Pressure

Attach appropriate blood pressure cuff to arm
Using doppler, identify the brachial pulse
Inflate the pressure cuff until doppler signal disappears
Slowly release pressure and note when doppler signal returns
Repeat on other arm

Measure Ankle Pressure

Attach blood pressure cuff to ankle
Measure Dorsalis Pedis Pressure
Identify dorsalis pedis pulse with doppler
Inflate cuff and note pressure when doppler signal returns
Measure Posterior Tibial Pressure
Identify posterior tibial pulse with doppler
Inflate cuff and note pressure when doppler signal returns
Repeat on other leg
Calculate ABI
Interpret ABI results

Conclusion

Suggest further tests if needed
